Uma rua onde só fosse possível a travessia de pedestres. A ideia de uma via com essa característica surgiu lá nos anos 1970, baseada em uma que já existia na cidade de Curitiba. Foi assim que a antiga Rua Coronel Cláudio transformou-se no ‘Calçadão’ de Ponta Grossa. O nome da antiga rua veio de um antigo personagem na história ponta-grossense.
No ano de 1890, período próximo a Proclamação da República, Ponta Grossa era uma cidade com oito mil habitantes. Naquela época, o governo estadual nomeava intendentes para administrar as cidades e o Coronel Cláudio Gonçalves Guimarães, ex-tropeiro, nascido em Castro, veio para Ponta Grossa.
O coronel comandou a cidade até o ano de 1892. O Calçadão é um dos pontos de maior movimento de pedestres na cidade. Com quatro quarteirões, o comércio na região é bastante intenso. São várias lojas, de todos os gostos e tipos para atender o público. Os turistas que desejam conhecer o Calçadão devem ficar atentos aos horários de funcionamento das lojas, que fecham entre 17h e 18h.
